How to create a coastal chic style

Updated: Sep 10

Neutrals form the cornerstone of Coastal Chic style. Classic shades like white, beige, and cream are essential in Coastal decor. To evoke the essence of the sea and sky, incorporate accents of blue (including navy) and green while incorporating natural elements such as our Seagrass or Jute.

Coastal Chic is a decorating style distinct from a Nautical theme, though the two are frequently mixed up. It offers a stylish interpretation of coastal living rather than a direct replica.

Essential Features of Coastal Chic:

  • Neutral and natural furnishings

  • Relaxed, airy fabrics such as cotton and linen

  • Accents of blue or green for a splash of color

  • Light wood that mimics the look of driftwood

  • Flooring in seagrass, jute or sisal or with a grey-washed finish

  • Beaded, rattan or wooden light fixtures

  • Natural elements like seashells, driftwood, and fresh flowers

  • White (vivid white) walls

The vibe in this lovely beach house in the Fleurieu Peninsula is relaxed and casual where elements of the sand, sky, and coastline all collide in a beautifully neutral palette with punctuations of whites, greys and soft pinks. The client chose to use our Cabarita Seagrass in four of the bedrooms and jute and seagrass rugs in the living space and kitchen area.

Seagrasses are flowering plants which grow in marine environments. Seagrass has a ‘waxy coat’ and although allowing water molecules to enter, dyes and other stains have difficultly penetrating.  It's a great product for high transit areas and is washable. Perfect look for beach houses, coastal aesthetic and commercial hubs.

Seagrass, sisal and jute are natural fibres offering great textural quality, which is important in effective costal chic interior design. Natural flooring, in the way of rugs, runners and wall to wall installations, also offers a wonderful neutral palette and is therefore the perfect choice for coastal homes. For expert advice on what type of flooring should be used where (for example, high traffic areas such as living spaces and entrances require harder-wearing flooring compared to less frequented spaces such as bedrooms) the experienced team at Natural Floors can help.

Tackling Solid Mishaps

When food or mud lands on your rug:

  1. Gentle Removal: Use a suitable tool to gently lift off the solid bits without being too forceful.

  2. Light Cleaning: Dab the area with water, a mild detergent, and a sponge. Avoid scrubbing aggressively.

  3. Proper Drying: Follow the liquid spill drying tips below to ensure thorough drying. This is the most important step!

Handling Liquid Spills

Spilled a drink or sauce? No worries, here’s how to save the day:

  1. Act Fast: Quickly blot or vacuum up the spill with a towel.

  2. Foot Press Blotting: Place a towel over the spill and press firmly with your feet to absorb as much moisture as possible. If it is a large spill use a hair dryer to absorb the liquid (but don't get too close to the material as it could burn it)

  3. Tailored Treatments:

  • Mild Spills: Sponge with water, dry with a towel, and let it air dry.

  • Medium Spills: Use gentle detergents and a soft brush, working from the outer edges inward to avoid spreading.

For larger spills or persistent stains, consider professional cleaning to ensure thorough removal without damaging the rug fibres.
